Four separate earthquakes in Murcia this Thursday

It was an earthquake-heavy day in the Region of Murcia this Thursday August 15 as, according to Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN), no fewer than four earthquakes were recorded throughout the day.

The first of this chain of earthquakes occurred at 3.22am just off the coast of Cartagena. It had a magnitude of 1.5 and its epicentre was at a depth of 2 kilometres.

Barely two hours later, another tremor, this one measuring 1.8 on the Richter scale, was registered in Molina de Segura and the surrounding area. This earthquake had its epicentre at a greater depth, at 8 kilometres below the surface, just to the north of the urbanisations of Altorreal and La Alcayna.

Then, shortly after 9.30am, an earthquake of magnitude 2.2 was registered in Lorquí, also with an epicentre 8 kilometres deep. In addition, the IGN reported that it had been felt in nearby areas of Molina de Segura.

The fourth and final earthquake of the day had its epicentre in Campos del Río at a depth of 5 kilometres. It occurred at 8.38pm and had a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale. According to the IGN, the tremor was also felt in the towns of Archena, Las Torres de Cotillas, Alcantarilla, Ceutí, Villanueva del Río Segura and in Molina.

In the Region of Murcia, such small tremors are common and sometimes there are several per week, but rarely are they stronger than magnitude 3 and most of the time are nothing to worry about as they do not cause damage to either people or property
