Málaga's hotel industry is bracing for a difficult autumn after years of record-breaking tourism
September occupancy dipped for the first time in years and forecasts for October and November point to near double-digit falls, with some hotels already considering early closures
After several consecutive years of extraordinary performance, Málaga's hotel industry is showing the first signs of a shift. September brought what the provincial hotel association Aehcos described as "a bittersweet taste," with occupancy averaging 89.66%, a fall of 2.31 percentage points on the same month last year, when the association's member hotels hit 91.97%.That might not sound dramatic, but the tone from industry leaders is notably more cautious than in recent years. Javier Hernández, executive vice president of Aehcos, described it as "the first signs of a changing economic cycle, or at least a deceleration in the cruising speed that the region's main economic engine had been experiencing." A slight dip in September, he suggests, is not the concern in itself. It is what comes next.
The October and November forecasts are where the real alarm lies. Aehcos is projecting average occupancy of 81.50% for October, a drop of 8.71 percentage points compared to last year. November looks harder still, with a forecast of just 60.15%, representing a decline of nearly 10 percentage points. The association is warning that many hotels will need to reconsider their winter strategies, with "early temporary closures or staff reductions" a likely response to what it describes as "visibly diminishing demand."
Within that picture, some destinations have held up better than others in September. Torremolinos led the province with the highest occupancy rates, followed closely by Benalmádena. Mijas reached 89.50% and Nerja 88.40%, while Fuengirola and Marbella registered 86.70% and 86.30% respectively. Estepona brought up the rear at 80.50%.
One thing that remains firmly in place is the dominance of international visitors. Three quarters of guests in September, 75.08%, came from abroad, with the UK, Germany, France and the Nordic countries all continuing to perform strongly.
The Pilar long weekend is expected to provide a temporary boost, with high occupancy rates forecast across Málaga and the wider region. But Hernández and Aehcos are clear-eyed about what that means in the broader context. "The one-off success of a long weekend is not enough to mask a generalised slowdown, which will force the sector to undertake a profound strategic review for next winter," the association stated.
It is a sobering message from an industry that has had very little to complain about in recent years. The summer of records may not be quite over, but autumn is arriving in more ways than one.
