Mazarrón twins with Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora in historic signing
Mazarrón celebrates a historic day in its twinning with Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora
Mazarrón marked a historic day on November 28 with the official twinning of three emblematic municipalities: Mazarrón, Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora, the last two being municipalities in the province of Almería.
The twinning event, which according to Mazarrón Town Hall itself was “full of sentiment”, represents a union that “transcends borders and reaffirms the ties of a common past linked to mining”.
The event was attended by the Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo Méndez, the Mayor of Vera, Alfonso García Ramos, and the Mayor of Cuevas del Almanzora, Antonio Fernández Liria, accompanied by councillors from the respective municipal corporations and numerous residents who did not want to miss this unique moment.
The day was a sincere tribute to the miners who worked in the mines of Mazarrón, Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora, especially remembering those who lost their lives or suffered illnesses as a result of their harsh working conditions.
This historic recognition, in addition to paying tribute to those who dedicated their lives to mining, symbolises the beginning of a close collaboration between the three municipalities, with the aim of promoting tourism, culture and local development.
The Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, highlighted the importance of this twinning, saying, “Today we pay tribute to the miners who marked our history with their effort and sacrifice, but we are also building a shared future between Mazarrón, Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora.”
He also highlighted the opportunity that this agreement represents to strengthen ties in areas such as tourism, culture and local development.
For his part, Antonio Fernández Liria, Mayor of Cuevas del Almanzora, stressed, “This twinning symbolises our willingness to work together to preserve our historical memory and strengthen the heritage that connects us as sister towns.”
Alfonso García Ramos, Mayor of Vera, added, “Today we are not only paying tribute to those who worked in the mines and left an indelible legacy, but we are also committed to building a present and a future of collaboration and progress for our municipalities.”
During the event, the work of those who promoted the first Mining Week was also recognised, a pioneering event that highlighted the mining history of the region and served as a starting point for this twinning.
With this union, Mazarrón, Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora reaffirm their commitment to honour their shared history while opening new doors for joint progress.
“It is a day that will remain engraved in the memory of our municipalities, because we not only reflect on the past with pride, but we move forward with hope towards the future,” concluded Ginés Campillo.
