Museo Jesús Nazareno, Jumilla
The home of one of the Semana Santa brotherhoods in Jumilla
The Jesús Nazareno museum in Jumilla is housed in a highly ornate building in the Plaza de Arriba, an architecturally and aesthetically pleasing square in the older quarter of the town which is also home to the Jerónimo Molina archaeological museum (formerly the Town Hall) and the church of San José.
The three-floor building is crowned by a dome and was clearly designed to match the splendor of its neighbours: it is home to the Jesús Nazareno brotherhood, one of those which play key roles in the annual Holy Week (or Semana Santa) processions.
Inside on the ground floor and first floor visitors can see the sculptures which are paraded through the streets by the brotherhood every Easter, along with numerous accoutrements such as costumes, banners, jewelry, lanterns and the like. It is safe to say that the design of the building is a fair reflection of the cult of decoration, splendour and adornment which surrounds the Holy Week processions and the items the members of the brotherhood wear and carry while taking part.
Address: Plaza de Arriba, nº 12, 30520 Jumilla (Región de Murcia)
Opening hours: Saturday 11.00 to 14.00 and 18.00 to 20.30, Sunday 11.00 to 14.00.
There is an entry fee of 1€, and large groups are requested to give prior notice of their visit so that adequate arrangements can be made.
