Orihuela Costa residents threaten legal action if rubbish collection services do not improve
Dozens of Orihuela Costa neighbourhoods are suffering from overflowing garbage bins for days on end

In recent weeks, social media has been flooded with grim photos of overflowing rubbish bins and household waste piled up beside containers throughout the Orihuela Costa. Residents have described this once picturesque corner of Alicante as nothing more than “a landfill” and the unsavoury scenario is repeated across dozens of urbanisations, posing serious risks to “public health and hygiene”.
Tired of the Orihuela City Council failing to provide proper waste collection services along the coast, the Cabo Roig y Lomas Neighbourhood Association has taken matters into its own hands, penning a letter to local mayor Pepe Vegara. In this address, the group threatens to take legal action “if within a few weeks, before the summer season, the service is not being provided normally”.
The frequency of garbage collection varies from estate to estate in the Orihuela Costa but in general, it’s not nearly frequent enough given the booming population, and on long weekends or over holidays the rubbish can remain on the side of the road for up to four days. For this simple reason, the Neighbourhood Association has accused the Orihuela City Council of “failing to comply with its obligations provided for in the regulations regarding waste collection and street cleaning in Orihuela Costa, generating serious public health problems.”
Similar complaints have been lodged on several occasions, but the administration continues to insist that rubbish is being collected as normal and on a regular basis. Local residents would tend to disagree, arguing that “the service is incomplete, poorly planned and does not have the necessary human, technical and material resources.”Sources from the Cabo Roig y Lomas Neighbourhood Association point out that in September the plenary session approved an extraordinary credit of 2.5 million euros to reinforce the service.
According to an Orihuela City spokesperson, this money should be spent in a matter of days, as the administration is preparing to tender 1.4 million in trucks, 800,000 euros in rubbish bins and 300,000 in open garbage trucks.
