Unions pushed through pay rises for thousands of Murcia workers in 2024
Last year, 200,000 employees in the Region of Murcia saw their wages bumped up by almost 3%
As the new year gets underway, there’s plenty for workers in the Region of Murcia to celebrate. Nearly 200,000 employees saw improvements in their working conditions in 2024, thanks to a flurry of collective bargaining agreements pushed through by the unions.
The past year brought significant progress, although there’s still work to be done for those waiting on updated contracts.
In total, 59 agreements were signed across Murcia, impacting 27,167 businesses and benefiting 193,936 employees. Workers saw an average pay bump of 2.95%, slightly below the national average of 3.07%, but still a welcome boost for thousands of households.
Those in the know are hopeful that this financial gap will be closed in the very near future, though. According to forecasts, the Region of Murcia should generate 16,000 jobs annually during the three-year period from 2024-2026, well above the Spanish average.
This change is already well underway and the unions have led the charge, securing 23 agreement renewals last year which positively impacted 183,890 workers. These employees enjoyed an average pay rise of 2.89%. Meanwhile, private company agreements made a smaller but noteworthy impact, with 36 agreements covering 10,046 employees who received an average salary hike of 4.02%.
However, it wasn’t all positive news. Murcia workers are clocking in longer hours compared to the national average. While Spanish employees worked 1,755.74 hours annually on average, those in the Region of Murcia logged an extra 25 hours, bringing their total to 1,779.05 hours.
Despite the strides made in 2024, there’s still plenty on the to-do list. Around 100,000 workers in the Region are waiting for their agreements to be renewed, including those in key industries like road transport, private healthcare and forestry and livestock farming. These three sectors alone account for more than half of the affected workforce.
