Alicante has recorded nearly 38,000 blood donations this year, and the summer campaign is still running
With 80 special collection points set up across the province, donating has never been easier, and first-time donors are stepping up in impressive numbers
Nearly 480 people in Alicante gave blood for the very first time this summer. That's not a small thing. Each of those donations can save or improve the lives of up to three different patients, which means a lot of families across the province have reason to be quietly grateful.Since July 1, when the annual summer blood drive got under way, Alicante province has recorded 7,438 blood donations and 586 plasma donations, contributing to a regional total of 20,809 blood extractions and 1,275 plasma donations across the Valencian Community. For the year as a whole, Alicante has now accumulated 38,294 donations, part of a regional figure exceeding 106,000.
Keeping blood supplies stable during summer is a genuine challenge. People travel, routines shift, and the heat puts some donors off. To counter that, health authorities have set up 200 special collection points across the Valencian Community, 80 of them in Alicante province alone, spread across coastal resorts, tourist hubs and inland towns. The idea is simple: make it easy enough that donating fits around a holiday rather than requiring a special trip.
It's worth remembering that hospitals don't slow down in August. Surgeries, transplants, accident emergencies, cancer treatments and complications during childbirth all continue regardless of the season, and blood reserves need to be maintained daily to meet that demand. A single donated bag is processed to separate red blood cells, platelets and plasma, meaning one visit to a donation point can benefit up to three different people.
To donate, you need to be aged between 18 and 65, weigh more than 50 kilos, be in good general health, bring an ID and not be fasting. The process takes a relatively short time and the network of collection points makes it straightforward to find somewhere convenient.
If you'd like to find a donation point near you, click here for locations across Alicante province.
