Three Irish cyclists hospitalised after serious Orihuela hit-and-run

Two of the injured are still in a serious condition as investigators examine whether an unauthorised vehicle adaptation may have contributed to the crash

Three Irish cyclists have been hospitalised after they were seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash on the CV-925 in Orihuela, with two still in a guarded condition as the Guardia Civil investigates the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The accident happened at 3.36pm on Wednesday April 8 at kilometre 9 of the CV-925, on the stretch heading towards Pilar de la Horadada.

The three injured cyclists, aged between 56 and 68, were riding as part of a larger group when they were struck by a car.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and all three men were taken to hospital.

One of the injured cyclists was transferred to Hospital del Vinalopó with a head injury, where he remains admitted. The other two were taken to Hospital Vega Baja after suffering multiple injuries and remain under observation with a guarded prognosis.

Health authorities have not yet released details about the current condition of the third cyclist.

The driver of the car, a 73-year-old Spanish man, was identified at the scene.

According to sources close to the case, he tested negative for both alcohol and drugs after the collision.

However, investigators are now looking into another key aspect of the case after it emerged that the vehicle had an unauthorised homemade adaptation.

Sources from the Guardia Civil said the driver has a disability, and officers are now examining whether the non-approved modification to the vehicle may have played a role in the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing as officers work to establish exactly how the collision happened and whether any charges will follow.
