Wildfire stabilised after residents evacuated from Camposol and Mazarrón Country Club

Hundreds of emergency personnel worked through the night to stop the fire spreading towards nearby homes

A major wildfire that forced precautionary evacuations in parts of Camposol, El Saladillo and Mazarrón Country Club has now been stabilised after firefighters worked through the night to bring the blaze under control.

Murcia regional president Fernando López Miras confirmed on Friday morning July 24, that the fire, which broke out in the La Pinilla area between Mazarrón and Fuente Álamo, was stabilised at 6.30am.

In a message shared on social media, he thanked everyone involved in the operation, saying: "The teams will continue working in the area until they manage to extinguish it. Thank you to all the professionals for the great work they are doing."

The fire started at around 5.11pm on Thursday and quickly spread through pine woodland and scrub. Strong winds made conditions particularly difficult for firefighters and helped drive the flames towards nearby residential areas.

As a precaution, residents in Camposol Sector A and El Saladillo were asked to leave their homes. Later that evening, the evacuation was extended to Mazarrón Country Club as emergency crews continued to tackle the fire.

An emergency shelter was opened at the Los Palacios Social Centre in Camposol for anyone unable to return home. Ten people stayed there overnight and, by 8.00am on Friday, four residents were still waiting for permission to go back to their properties.

Several neighbours said the fire appeared to have more than one starting point.

A huge emergency response was launched, with forest firefighting brigades from Cartagena, Mazarrón, Lorca, Zarcilla, Totana, Alhama de Murcia and Murcia working alongside environmental officers, firefighters from the regional fire service, Policía Local and Guardia Civil.

Four helicopters supported crews from the air during daylight hours, while a helicopter from the Ministry for Ecological Transition also joined the operation. Air support was suspended after dark, with firefighters continuing to battle the blaze from the ground throughout the night.

The Ayuntamiento of Fuente Álamo confirmed that the RM-E17 and RM-E19 roads remain closed while emergency services continue their work. Damage to a high-voltage power line has also raised the possibility of electricity interruptions in some areas.

People living in La Pinilla, Los Cánovas, Campillo and Las Palas have been advised to keep windows and shutters closed, avoid travelling near the affected area and follow the instructions of the emergency services.

Medical teams and Red Cross volunteers were also deployed to support those affected, including ambulance crews, nurses, logistics staff and specialists providing psychological support at the temporary shelter. FAST, the locally formed and highly respected first aid volunteer team in Camposol, looked after everyone before the medical teams arrived.

The exact cause of the wildfire has not yet been confirmed, although early reports suggest it may have been linked to a thermal burst caused by the intense heat.

The incident comes just days after another wildfire in El Alamillo, near Mazarrón, which was started by a lightning strike, showing just how extreme the wildfire risk is across the Region of Murcia during this spell of exceptionally hot, dry and windy weather.
